How do you typically teach grammar? Probably you’ll recognize yourself when reading the following statements:
You follow a predictable sequence of individual grammatical structures given in a coursebook (first the present simple, then the present continuous, after that comparison and contrast of the two, etc.);
You avoid teaching your lower-level students ‘higher-level’ grammatical structures (“This grammar is too difficult for you now”);
You feel worried because you’re not sure your students have understood the present simple, but you’re compelled to move on to the present continuous to keep up with the syllabus.
If you’ve ticked any of the above said, your students might face the following problems:
They can talk about English, but not in English;
They focus on structures in isolation, but they don’t get to see how real conversations develop;
Consequently, they can’t efficiently participate in a real conversation.
So how to keep it real? What can we teachers do in class? How to teach grammaticalised lexis rather than lexicalised grammar?
Join in and we’ll talk about it (and even practise).
